Do I need an Air Vent?

we often get asked the question - Do I need an air vent in my room?

Well, if the output of your stove is 5kW or less. then you do NOT need and Air Brick or Air Vent!

If the output of your stove is greater than 5kW, then you Do need some kind of permanent ventilation to the room. Whilst there is no stipulation in the building regulations as to the type of vent that must be used, there are rules as too the Air Vent Area is regulated at 550mm² per kW over and above 5kW. Therefore, an 8kW stove would have a free air requirement of 1650mm².

A sufficient air supply for a solid fuel appliance is very important. It ensures that complete combustion of the fuel occurs and it also allows the flue or chimney to function properly. An inadequate air supply can have serious consequences. For example, increased levels of carbon monoxide will be produced which can be life threatening and smoking will occur.

The amount of ventilation required does vary for other types of appliance such as open fires or stoves with flue draught stabilisers, please contact us or your HETAS approved installer for advice.
